Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Did you know Colorado Springs has its very own zoo? Sitting high up on the mountain side, our Cheyenne Mountain Zoo not only offers fun experiences relating to animal exhibits, great food, but also in the way of amazing views of our beautiful Colorado Springs. A family adventure (and even those without kids) is sure to be had with a visit to our zoo!
Going back to 1916, the eventual founder of the zoo, Philanthropist Spencer Penrose was given a bear, beginning his love and collection of exotic animals. Keeping his animals at a ranch and the nearby Broadmoor Hotel, he eventually founded The Cheyenne Mountain Zoological Society in 1926. His animals would soon call the zoo their new home, among many others to be featured in the zoos exhibits.
Sitting at 6,714 feet above seal level, the zoo is the highest zoo in America and is currently ranked as the #4 Best Zoo in North America by USA TODAY. With many exhibits for patrons to enjoy, the zoo really is a great place to enjoy for a day. From giraffe feedings in the African Rift Valley, Budge feedings in the Australia Walkabout, Elephant Snack Time in the Encounter Africa Exhibit, many hands-on experiences in the Loft and Big Backyard, everyone is sure to find something they love! You can even check out the zoo’s giraffe cams during zoo hours to watch the giraffes gather for food and play. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the sky ride to visit the bears where you’ll take a ski lift up the mountain to get an eyeful of the bear exhibits.
While you’re at the zoo, it’s a given that all that walking and fun may lead to hunger. Head on over to the Grizzly Grill, Pizza with a View, Elson’s Place, or Rocky Mountain Barbecue Co, to enjoy some delicious grub to re-energize. If you require your energy in the form of a cup of coffee, The Cozy Goat Espresso Bar is sure to fulfill your caffeine needs. Enjoy shopping in the gift shop and don’t forget to let the kids take a spin on the carousel. Should you choose to forgo these lovely restaurants, there are many picnics and outdoor seating areas located throughout the zoo. You are welcome to bring food and coolers along with you as long as you leave the glass containers and alcohol at home and promise not to share you grub with the animals.
The zoo also offers events and programs should you need something a little different than the typical day at the zoo. With Stroller Safaris, holiday events such as Boo at the Zoo and the Christmas light show, custom animal experiences that allow up-close and personal behind the scenes experiences with the animals and zookeepers, birthday party packs and so much more, we are sure you can find something to enjoy!
