Steps to getting your Colorado Driver’s License.

Need a Colorado Driver’s License?

With the hustle and bustle of moving, there are lots of additional tasks that can easily fall to the bottom of your to-do list – such as that greatly anticipated DMV trip for a new license! Thankfully, you have up to 30 days to notify the DMV of your change of address. Whether you just moved from out of state or are needing to update your current Colorado license, this guide will inform you of the easiest ways to get that new or updated license.

Getting a Colorado Driver’s License after moving from out of state

To get your new license you will need to make an appointment with your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Fortunately, Colorado Springs has several DMV locations for you to choose from. For driver’s license services, you will want to make an appointment at a state DMV rather than a county DMV. Click here to find the location that best serves your needs.

Before you leave for your appointment, be sure to gather all the necessary documents. All documents need to be original and unaltered (not laminated, no pen marks, etc.). You will need:

  • Your current driver’s license.
  • Certified birth certificate or passport.
  • Proof of social security number.
  • Two documents of proof of Colorado residency that include your name, address, and the date within the last 365 days.

Getting your current Colorado Driver’s License renewed

To renew your current license, click here to see if you are eligible to renew online! If you are turning 21 and looking to get your new license, the DMV requires you make an in-person appointment. At this appointment, you will be required to bring:

  • Your current driver’s license.
  • Certified birth certificate or passport.
  • Proof of social security number.
  • Two documents of proof of Colorado residency that include your name, address, and the date within the last 365 days.

If you are moving within the state of Colorado and just need to make an address change on your license, you can make this change online. Click here to change the address on your current Colorado driver’s license. If you’d prefer to do so in-person, you can make an appointment.
