A list of steps to consider before your big move!
Want to move to Colorado Springs?
Colorado Springs is well-known for its easy access to the outdoors and beautiful “backyard” mountains! There are historical mountain towns to explore not too far from the Springs, fun and family-friendly community events, challenging hikes, and lots of local stores and restaurants for you to enjoy. Colorado Springs has a lot to offer! As you work towards your big move, here is a short checklist of steps to consider before and after.
1. Find a job before you relocate:
The most necessary step to complete before your move is to find a job that will help set you up for financial stability! We recommend applying for jobs directly through the employers website to avoid any scams and to streamline your job application process. Find the field you’re interested in or have experience in, research openings in the surrounding area, apply through the company you’re interested in, and best of luck to you.
2. Hire your REALTOR®! It matters more than you think:
Moving to a new city is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming, especially when you’re buying a home from miles away. The right REALTOR® doesn’t just open doors; they become your local expert, advocate, and strategist. Who you hire directly impacts your bottom line, your stress level, and the outcome of your move. A REALTOR® coordinates virtual tours, video walkthroughs, and trusted local vendors to help make your new house a home. Lisa Pflugh will make your move more simple, smooth, and successful.
3. Do your research:
Colorado Springs is made up of several smaller communities and neighborhoods that offer their own individual perks, cost of living, housing opportunities and more. Knowing what each area offers will help narrow down where you and your family will enjoy living the most. Check out our “Pikes Peak Areas and Neighborhoods” page by clicking here to learn more about the different neighborhoods available to you.
4. Hire moving help:
Moving can be quite the process. If you’re moving from a different city or state, it may be wise and helpful to budget in a moving company that will help pack up and transport your home goods to your new Colorado Springs home. This will take stress off your shoulders and hopefully give you more space to enjoy this exciting, new transition. Be aware that there are moving “brokers” who are intermediaries to moving companies. One of the common “tricks” is that they will load up your belongings, and then tell you it’s going to cost more (sometimes double) to move your items. They bet on the fact that you won’t have them unload and will just accept this new price. Ask questions about pricing and what their moving services entail to avoid any surprise extra costs.
If you choose to do it all yourself, that’s perfectly okay too! Ask local grocery stores and liquor stores if you can have their boxes to pack all your things in. Be sure to have ample supplies of tape, packing paper, and straps to make sure nothing moves during transport. Reserve your moving truck well ahead of time to make sure you have the truck you need when you need it. If you don’t want to transport your items yourself, look into a company like PODS that will do the shipping part themselves.
5. Give yourself time to acclimate:
Colorado Springs may be a bit higher in elevation than you are used to. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, take naps as you need, and be patient with yourself as your body acclimates to the higher altitude.
6. Find your community:
While you may have found the neighborhood and home you want, be sure to get out in the community so you can find new friends to enjoy your new life and home here in Colorado Springs. Check out event pages for various community events, farmers markets, craft shows, car shows, food trucks and more. Don’t be shy!
